if you do not have ballistas and such yet mainly use archers because they have range also send some cataphracts along to take care of any abatisis.


in battle pikemen defeat swords so id suggest getting pikemen more than swords as they are cheaper and can beat swordmen down

Well not to contradict what Karma has posted: Best Combination for assault is Warriors and Archers. Warriors are cheap and easy to feed and archers are good range units. Ballista are good but also slow so it depends on your preference.
